Random Kris Bryant injury update comes out of nowhere to remind Cubs fans he exists

Following the weekend that Anthony Rizzo made his return to Wrigley Field, Chicago Cubs may have scrolled past an injury update on Rizzo's former teammate, Kris Bryant.

When Bryant signed a seven-year deal with the Colorado Rockies prior to the 2022 season, the impression was that the former Cubs' MVP was looking for a place where he could play baseball and be left alone. That could be part of the reason why Bryant shared some regret over how the process of his signing with the Rockies went down.

While Bryant has faded away from being one of the faces of Major League Baseball during his time with the Rockies, he hasn't been able to play much baseball. Over the course of the last three seasons, Bryant has played 159 games with the Rockies. Less than a full season, and when he has been on the field, he's been a shell of his former self. Since joining the Rockies, Bryant is slashing .250/.332/.381 with an OPS+ of 89.

As for the 2024 season, Bryant has only appeared in 37 games and it seems that his 2024 season is over. Bryant has been on the IL since August 6 due to a lingering back injury and in an update provided over the weekend, chances are he will not be making a return for the Rockies this month.

The interesting part of the update provided by Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post was how he closed his story.

After this season, Bryant will still be owed $107 million over the next four years. Whether the Rockies will continue to hold onto Bryant or move on and cut their losses remains to be seen.

If the Rockies were to cut their losses, it remains to be seen what interest there would be in Bryant across Major League Baseball. If anything, assuming the Rockies are on the hook for the remaining $107MM after this season, a team may take a chance on Bryant with a minor-league deal and see if he can be healthy enough to contribute. But, the days of Bryant being a fixture in any starting lineup appear to be over.
