Cubs fans will die laughing at Brewers TV call of a brutal Christian Yelich error

Milwaukee's broadcast team lost its collective mind as they watched the play unfold.

After watching the Milwaukee Brewers outperform expectations year after year - and establish themselves as the top dog in the National League Central - you'd be hard-pressed to find many Chicago Cubs fans who feel all that sympathetic to their hated rivals or their fans.

Which made Christian Yelich's horrendous error on Thursday in San Francisco - and the Brewers' TV call of the play - even more entertaining. The dropped ball cost Milwaukee the game, as the Brew Crew dropped three of four to the Giants, falling three games back of the Cubs heading into the weekend.

A closed door meeting in April isn't ever a good sign - but it's early enough that you can count on Pat Murphy getting his team locked back in with summer approaching. When I watched the play, as I'm sure was the case with other Cubs fans, all I could think about was outfielder Brant Brown dropping a fly ball back in 1998 - a moment that lives on in the nightmares of us all decades later.

As most of us also know, Ron Santo's reaction on WGN Radio is one of the most memorable calls of his broadcasting career. You can actually hear the apalling shock in his voice as the Brewers score two runs on what should have been a game-ending catch in left field.

But back to Yelich and this year's Milwaukee ballclub. They take on the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend at Busch Stadium, entering Friday at 13-13. The Cubs, meanwhile, have outpaced expectations in a tough month of April, welcoming the Philadelphia Phillies to Wrigley Field this weekend as they get ready to turn the page to a much more favorable schedule in May.

We've seen what one game can end up meaning - just two years ago, one more win would have put the Cubs over the top in the National League playoff picture. We don't yet know how the 2025 season will shake out and what this one loss will end up meaning or not meaning to Milwaukee, but I don't think any of us are losing any sleep watching the Cubs' biggest rival lose a game in such brutal fashion.
