Chicago Cubs Minor League Recap: Matt Shaw debuts & Pete Crow-Armstrong starts at AAA

The Chicago Cubs prospects had a great day all around as Caleb Kilian and Luis Devers pitched well and Matt Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong made their debuts.

Iowa Cubs (AAA) (59-42)

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Toledo Mud Hens 8-2

Iowa actually took a 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh but then the wheels fell off. The Cubs got a solid pitching performance out of their starter but failed to get anything going offensively or out of the bullpen as they took the loss in this one.

Miles Mastrobuoni (3B) went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer. He may have been the most irritating player at Wrigley, but he’s carrying a .302 average in Iowa.

Alexander Canario (OF) went 2-for-3 as he continued to ramp up. He’s still not hitting for much power as they were both singles but he also drew a walk.

Pete Crow-Armstrong (OF) is human after all. He went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts but he also drew a walk, stole a base, and played exceptional outfield defense.

Caleb Kilian (RHP) threw six strong innings only allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn’t help him.

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (55-41)

The Tennessee Smokies beat the Chattanooga Lookouts 9-2

This was a great game for Tennessee. The bats came to life despite missing Pete Crow-Armstrong in the lineup and we saw some serious impact out of a couple of our mid-season top-30 prospects list and one of the guys we said could help the bullpen immediately.

Owen Caissie (OF) went 3-for-4 with his 20th homer of the season and he added two singles, three RBI, and three runs scored to raise his average to .286 on the season. My guess is he won’t be far behind Pete Crow-Armstrong on the call-up list.

Pablo Aliendo (C) went 1-for-4 with a three run home run.

Andy Weber (2B) went 3-for-4 with three singles, an RBI and a run scored.

BJ Murray (3B) was a monster. He went 3-for-4 ending just a home run shy of the cycle and adding a walk and two runs scored.

Cole Roederer (OF) went 2-for-4 with two singles, two RBI and a run scored.

Walker Powell (RHP) threw five innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four.

Luke Little (LHP) was dominant as usual lately. The big lefty threw a perfect eighth inning as he struck out all three batters he faced.

South Bend Cubs (A+) (44-52)

The South Bend Cubs beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-2

South Bend has turned it on lately and they now find themselves less than ten games under .500. This was a very special game as we saw some prospects we expect to dominate play very well, but we also had a player get back on track and Matt Shaw make his debut in full-season ball in a big way.

James Triantos (2B) went 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a walk, three RBI, and three runs scored.

Christian Franklin (OF) went 2-for-4 with a home run, a single, two RBI, and a run scored.

Felix Stevens (1B) went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBI.

Moises Ballesteros (C) is a dude. He went 3-for-5 with a double, two singles, an RBI and a run scored. He’s now batting .323 at High-A as a 19-year-old catcher.

Matt Shaw (SS) made an instant impact. He went 2-for-5 with a triple, a single, and two runs scored. The triple came in his first at-bat in full-season ball.

Luis Devers (RHP) had the bounceback we were all hoping for. He went five innings of scoreless baseball and he only allowed one hit and no walks as he struck out six. If he can get back on track that would be huge for the system.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (55-40)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans had their game against the Down East Wood Ducks suspended at 4-0

You’d expect this to be a grand slam, but you’d be wrong. The Pelicans had a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the game was suspended and they’d yet to collect an extra-base hit but they’d strung together a handful of singles, a walk, and a HBP to take a dominant early lead.
