The talk of Cubs Convention (aside from the 2016 reunion) centered on the arrival of Alex Bregman and the anticipation of the 2026 season. While it may not be at the 2016 levels of optimism, there was a very positive vibe over the past weekend. Coming off 92 wins, bolstering the pitching staff, and adding a player who will be a cornerstone for the next five years has certainly boosted morale.

A chapter officially closed with Kyle Tucker signing with the Dodgers, and a new one has opened with the likes of Bregman and Edward Cabrera. Yes, the Tucker situation has been beating a dead horse, but it's good to finally put what was inevitable to bed.

No disrespect to Tucker's talent as a ballplayer or his contributions last year, but he was an involuntary mercenary who knew he was on borrowed time. Tucker likely puts up better numbers in Los Angeles, but Bregman can serve the Cubs in a way that fits well for them with a cemented role for the long haul.

A new Cubs core centered around Alex Bregman is emerging ahead of the 2026 season.

It was hard to hear Bregman talk about winning championships in Chicago and not feel pumped. Jed Hoyer mentioned in his panel at the convention how Bregman's leadership, personality, and intangibles were major driving factors to sign him. He had also mentioned in the presser how Bregman reached out to his teammates, asked for their scouting reports, and discussed hitting philosophies with the organization's staff.

One of the many others singing the praises of Bregman was Pete Crow-Armstrong. Bregman already had a conversation with Crow-Armstrong and has helped "install confidence" in the young outfielder.

Beyond just Bregman, there is hope that 2026 can be another fun season. The Cubs have a good lineup on paper, added a fireballer to the rotation, and are once again set up to be very good defensively. There will be plenty of competition in the National League again, and those pesky Brewers find a way every year, but the Cubs' odds to contend look solid right now. Hopefully, they live up to the hype.
