During Alex Bregman's introductory press conference on Thursday, Jed Hoyer revealed that one of the first requests Bregman had was scouting reports of every player on the Chicago Cubs roster. In his time with the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, Bregman developed a reputation for being a leader in the clubhouse and a mentor for the younger players he worked with.

There may have been an expectation that Cubs fans wouldn't see the impact of Bregman's arrival until spring training got underway next month, but it turns out it is already happening.

Most Cubs players are in town this weekend for the Cubs Convention, and it serves as the first opportunity for Bregman to meet his new teammates. Bregman and Nico Hoerner had a hitting session together before the convention got started on Friday night, and Pete Crow-Armstrong revealed the All-Star third baseman already had a conversation with him about his 2026 goals.

It didn’t take long for Alex Bregman to start shaping the Cubs’ future

The 2025 season was a roller coaster for Crow-Armstrong. He earned a selection to the National League All-Star team with a first-half performance that had him at the center of MVP discussions, but offensive struggles crept in during the closing weeks of the regular season and into the playoffs.

Crow-Armstrong has never been one to be shy with his emotions, and in the playoffs, it seemed like the moment was getting too big for the young outfielder. Throughout last season, Crow-Armstrong highlighted the importance of Justin Turner's presence in the clubhouse, and it seems like Bregman will take it a step further.

It's a small detail, but for Bregman to simply say he believes in Crow-Armstrong and trusts his 2026 goals, that goes a long way for a player who is in his infancy stages of being a regular at the major league level.

It also could be the reason why the Cubs wanted to avoid opt-outs in Bregman's contract and were willing to include a full no-trade clause. Above the player that they will have on the field, the Cubs want the person that Bregman is behind the scenes to serve as a guide for their entire organization.
