Alex Bregman says all the right things in his Cubs introductory press conference

Alex Bregman is here for one thing: to win a championship.

That should be music to the ears of Chicago Cubs fans who are jubilant over the signing of Bregman to the third-largest free-agent deal in franchise history - and, really, over the team's offseason moves, as a whole.

Bregman has worn #2 for his entire 10-year MLB career, but is switching to #3 in 2026 with the Cubs. His new teammate and fellow infielder Nico Hoerner already wears #2. But when asked why he chose '3' as his new number - the two-time World Series champion had the perfect answer in his pocket.

Cubs' Alex Bregman left no doubt what he cares about as a player

Winning was the theme present in almost every answer Bregman gave - and in all his actions we heard about since he signed with the team. The three-time All-Star wasted no time connecting with his new teammates after the news of the deal broke last weekend and has been in communication with not only fellow players, but coaches and the front office with spring training right aroune the corner.

Even those with concerns over what the final years of this deal may look like have to admit the 2026 Cubs are definitely a better team with Bregman locked in at the hot corner. On-field production aside, though, his introductory presser already gave us a glimpse at why this guy comes so highly-rated from his time in Boston and Houston as a leader and someone who elevates everyone around him.

Chicago is coming off a 92-win 2025 season that saw them fall just one victory shy of an NLCS appearance. Bregman, the team's biggest free-agent splash since signing Dansby Swanson prior to the 2023 season, brings the same sort of energy we got when Jon Lester came to town more than a decade ago: this is a guy who's ready to work, lead and do what it takes to bring home wins all season long.
