Chicago Cubs Prospects: Cubs have two of the top ten first base prospects from MLB
The Chicago Cubs farm system is loaded with talent and that includes two guys that could be battling it out to be the first baseman of the future on the North Side.
Last week MLB dot com ranked their top ten RHP prospects, top ten LHP prospects, and the top ten catching prospects and the Chicago Cubs were well represented on all three.
They had the number two RHP with 2022 1st Rounder Cade Horton, the number nine LHP with 2021 1st Rounder Jordan Wicks and the number eight catcher on the list with 2021 IFA signing Moises Ballesteros.
The Cubs had perhaps their most impressive appearance on the list so far with their first base prospects as they had not one, but two representatives on the top ten first base prospects as laid out by the writers at MLB.com.
Matt Mervis appeared at number five on their list with Haydn McGeary appearing immediately after him at sixth overall. We didn’t have Mervis ranked in our top thirty prospects heading into the 2024 season after a disappointing stint at the major league level where he appeared to be absolutely overwhelmed by left-handed pitching, however, McGeary did appear at number 22 in our organizational top thirty prospect list.
McGeary had an excellent season last year when he batted .275/.397/.462 with 19 homers and that has led to some high expectations going into 2024. We had this to say in our write up and the writers at MLB.com said that he was the prospect on the list with the “humblest beginning” after being a 15th-round draft pick back in 2022:
The Cubs seemed to have their first-baseman of the future in waiting at AAA to start last year in the form of Matt Mervis but that position (especially with the uncertainty surrounding Cody Bellinger’s future with the organization) is very much in flux to start 2024. If McGeary starts the year as hot as he played last season he may be the next prospect fans are dying to get to Wrigley.
