The Chicago Cubs still could bring back Alex Avila, especially after his most recent comments on MLB radio. And could Friday be the end for Hector Rondon?

The Chicago Cubs are still looking for a backup catcher for next season. We’ve talked about having Victor Caratini step in. We’ve also discussed Rene Rivera for the job. But after his recent comments on MLB radio, the Cubs might need to switch their attention back to Alex Avila. The veteran has said it’s not about being a starter, but playing for a winning team, regardless of his role. The Cubs would be best to swoop in and get him before anyone else does.

It possible that today could be the end for the Cubs’ Hector Rondon. He’s a non-tender candidate, and you have to wonder if the Cubs feel he can contribute to the team next season. He’s due for a raise, but it’s unlikely the Cubs feel he should get one. It’s also possible the Cubs could non-tender him, and then sign him for a better deal. Either way, his future is going to be decided on Friday.

It might be the Hot Stove, but it’s been outright frigid so far. The Astros are looking to unload Mike Fiers who will be eligible for arbitration for the second time. While he’s struggled with the Astros, he’s quite familiar with the NL Central after playing with the Brewers. Could he be a possible target for the Cubs? More importantly, are the Cubs past the days of reclamation projects?
