Worrisome injury will sideline Cubs prospect Ethan Conrad for at least a month

Health remains the main question for the former Wake Forest standout.

The start of Ethan Conrad's first full professional season is on hold - at least temporarily - with the 2025 Chicago Cubs first-rounder sidelined with an undefined lower back injury.

Cubs director of player development Jason Kanzler said Conrad will miss 'roughly' a month with the injury but admitted that, from there, things are still very much up in the air. It's a tough blow for the 17th overall pick in last summer's MLB Draft, especially given the fact his college career ended on a sour note with a shoulder injury that prevented him from seeing any minor league action last summer.

The shoulder injury, which required season-ending surgery last year, is likely the only reason the Cubs got their hands on Conrad in the first place. Chicago believes he's got top-10 pick skills, so getting him back on the field at 100 percent will be their top priority this spring.

“When he was doing his hitting work with us on the backfields and in the cages,” Kanzler told MLB.com, “it is impressive. It’s loud tools. It’s exactly what we expected when we drafted him. He’s got tools. He’s got skills. So, we’re just going to manage this right now so we can get him back on the field.”

Kanzler said there wasn't anything specific that caused the injury and given we're talking about a highly-regarded prospect, the Cubs are sure to slow play things with Conrad. Before the injury cut his year short, he was off to a scorching start for Wake Forest last season, slashing .372/.495/.744 in 21 games.

Cubs' long-term outfield uncertainty a huge chance for Ethan Conrad

Next winter is likely to bring tremendous change to the Chicago outfield, with both Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ set to his free agency. The latest reports don't sound like Jed Hoyer is pushing hard to extend either guy, at least not yet, leaving Gold Glover Pete Crow-Armstrong as the lone potential returnee heading into 2027.

The Cubs are deploying Matt Shaw as a super-utilityman this year, but he's the presumptive successor to Nico Hoerner at second base, assuming the veteran also departs in free agency. Kevin Alcántara could get a long look next spring, but comes with swing-and-miss concerns. Conrad, who actually leapfrogged Alcántara in MLB Pipeline's preseason prospect rankings, is still at least two years away from being big-league ready - but the opportunity certainly seems to be there.

As if prospects didn't bring enough uncertainty by themselves, the expiring CBA and what impact that could have on free agency and how owners and front offices operate make projecting the Cubs' outfield in 2027 and beyond even more challenging. One thing is for sure, though: they'll find a spot for Conrad if he can stay healthy and live up to the hype surrounding him when they took him in last summer's draft.
