Tom Ricketts said one thing about Cubs deadline that keeps aging worse

Most have completed their MLB trade deadline post-mortem, but for the Chicago Cubs, one quote from Tom Ricketts should be revisited. Lost in the news of the deadline week for the Cubs, between the trades and the fact that Jed Hoyer received a multi-year contract extension, is the fact that Tom Ricketts made himself available last week. In particular, there was one thing the Cubs' chairman said that feels like the team misjudged the deadline.

“We had a good trade deadline,” Ricketts said. “We have a really good team, and we added to it. I think it’s going to be a great couple months. When you look at the guys that are coming in through the trades, and look at the guys that are coming off the injured list, I think we’re really going to be in good shape for the rest of the season and into the postseason.”

The Cubs certainly had an active deadline, but even in the moment, it's hard to say that they had a good deadline. The only move that fits that description without further conversation is the Cubs' decision to add Willi Castro. Castro was a clear fit for the position-player side of the Cubs' roster, and there's no need for further debate.

Cubs deadline fallout is making Tom Ricketts look worse by the day

Jameson Taillon and Javier Assad returning from the IL certainly played a factor in the moves they made at the deadline, and that feels like the front office kicking the can on the season. Assad has yet to throw a pitch at the Major League level, so the Cubs' counting on his return as they are in "good shape" would be a gross misjudgment. Taillon has had an underwhelming season, and with the Cubs trailing the Brewers at the deadline, depending on his return also feels like the team not being aware of the situation.

Making things worse is the fact that Michael Soroka, the Cubs' biggest deadline addition, is on the IL with a return date that has yet to be set.

If anything, Ricketts' review of the deadline is further confirmation that the Cubs are good with moves that are good-to-good. The Cubs very rarely chase moves that are good-to-great, and that is becoming a growing problem.
