The thing no one is talking about.

The Chicago Cubs are approaching another trade deadline where it's clear that Joe Ryan is an ideal target. The Cubs were linked to the Minnesota Twins' ace last summer, and Ryan figures to be a name mentioned in trade talks once again this year.

Unlike last year, when the Twins were clear sellers, there's a case to be made for Ryan sticking around in Minnesota. The American League Central hasn't gotten away from the Twins, and they remain in the conversation of the Wild Card race. For those reasons, it's entirely possible that Ryan isn't on the trade market.

That hasn't stopped speculation. Ryan was No. 4 on ESPN's list of trade candidates ahead of the deadline, and Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel placed the odds of him being moved at 55%.

"Ryan was one of the lone survivors after the Twins' teardown last deadline -- and Minnesota was deep into discussions on deals involving him, as well. So, a move would surprise nobody, particularly considering that Ryan looks better than ever this season."

If the odds are that strong that Ryan will be traded, the Cubs need to be involved. Of course, there's one thing that could complicate those trade talks.

Cubs would love Joe Ryan's control, but that's the issue with him as a trade candidate

The Cubs need pitching for this season, that's certain. But the larger goal for the deadline would be to add someone under control beyond the 2026 season. Ryan checks that box, considering he's under control through the 2027 season.

That could be where the wrench is thrown into trade talks between the Cubs and Twins. At this point, it seems clear that baseball is headed toward a work stoppage ahead of the 2027 season. Assuming the 2027 season isn't missed entirely, chances are a significant portion of it will be.

In other words, the Cubs may not be trading for two months and another full season of Ryan. They may not be trading for two months and some change. That reality is going to distort his trade value. The Twins will probably sell Ryan's control as the former, while the Cubs, or not, will likely point ot the reality of the CBA situation.

Reaching common ground between those two realities could prove difficult to accomplish before the deadline. Ryan is a clear fit for what the Cubs need, but circumstance could be the primary reason why Jed Hoyer and Co. aren't able to get that deal done.
