Though Chicago Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger's Spring Training slash line is similar to the output that he had with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, there is no question that Bellinger appears to be fully healthy this Spring as he has shown a consistent ability to drive the ball.
Bellinger's ability to drive the ball was once again on display in the Cubs' Spring Training game against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon as he launched his second home run of Cactus League play.
Many have suspected that if Bellinger returns to form while playing out the 2023 season with the Cubs, he will undoubtedly sign a lucrative contract with another team elsewhere. The Cubs have three promising outfielder prospects in Brennen Davis, Peter Crow-Armstrong, and Kevin Alcantara that could all be at the upper levels of the team's minor league system by the end of the season. Davis will start the season with Triple-A Iowa while Crow-Armstrong and Alcantara likely will have an extended run at Double-A Tennessee this season.
The theory has been that the Cubs would be willing to let Bellinger walk at the end of the season with the assumption being that one of those prospects is on the cusp of reaching the Major League level. However, let's not forget that Ian Happ is a free agent after this season as well. If Bellinger bounces back this season and is a legitimate middle-of-the-order hitter with the Cubs, it is not out of the question that the team entertains the idea of bringing the 2019 National League MVP back on a multi-year deal and lets Happ walk.
