One thing the Chicago Cubs can't do at the MLB Trade Deadline

The Chicago Cubs should not abandon hope of a playoff run for the 2024 season.

Coming off a series sweep of the Orioles, the Chicago Cubs are finally showing signs of life in what has been, thus far, a somewhat disappointing season. With the trade deadline looming at the end of the month, the team faces an important decision.

The Cubs currently stand three games behind the Mets for the final wildcard spot. A strong run to close out the season could easily push them over the top. If the Cubs sell at the deadline, they would be abandoning a solid chance at the playoffs for an unknown outcome in the 2025 season.

Selling shouldn't be an option for the Chicago Cubs.

One option the Cubs can take at the deadline is either to stand pat, relying on the current team which has won six of its last seven games to continue the charge. If Ian Happ continues his hot streak and other players such as Dansby Swanson start hitting again, this may be their best option.

Another route the Cubs can take is to add one or two offensive pieces. Catcher is one notable position that needs an upgrade. If the Cubs traded for a good offensive catcher, such as the Rockies' Elias Diaz, they would get a much-needed boost at a position that has struggled to produce thus far.

The Cubs would not be alone in history if they managed to right the ship and have a deep playoff run. For example, the 2019 Nationals and 2021 Braves both got off to slow starts, hovering around .500 season’s midway point. Both teams, however, managed to turn things around after the All-Star Break and both won a World Series. The Cubs can look to both the Nationals' and Braves' recent successes as inspiration as they try to climb back into the playoff picture.

The Cubs' next two weeks will be very important. If they have a strong showing against the Cardinals this weekend, they should seriously consider their options for strengthening their position as contenders. Going all-in may not be the best idea, but the Cubs should certainly not throw away their chances when they still have plenty of time to come back.
