The finale of the Crosstown Classic between the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox is this weekend with two games on the Southside.

Considering the Cubs are in the middle of one of their more disappointing seasons in recent memory and the White Sox are on pace to potentially be the worst team in the history of Major League Baseball, there isn't much appeal to the games on Friday and Saturday.

However, in an effort to potentially get a spark, the White Sox announced that they have fired second-year manager Pedro Grifol.

While Cubs' fans, naturally, feared the Cubs being the team that would have ended the White Sox's historic losing streak, there is a new fear to be had. The bump in the clubhouse of the White Sox getting a new manager.

White Sox fire Pedro Grifol ahead of series against the Chicago Cubs.

Grifol's hire expedited the end of what never was a contention window for the White Sox. From the end of the 2019 season through 2021, there was this idea that the White Sox were ready to unseat the Cubs as the best baseball team in Chicago. Between the lack of further development of their players once they reached the Major League level and consecutive questionable managerial hires in Grifol and Tony La Russa, the White Sox's once-promising contention window turned into one of the more deflating time periods in Chicago sports history.

For the Cubs, they need to avoid the spark that the White Sox may have of playing with a new manager. The Cubs are barely clinging onto contention in the National League Wild Card race and anything short of sweeping the White Sox this weekend will be a disappointment.
