With the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings beginning next week, there is a sense that the Chicago Cubs will be at the center of many of the conversations.
Earlier this week, the Cubs were reported to be having trade talks with the Tampa Bay Rays regarding starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow. On Thursday, local confirmation of the talks was made as Bruce Levine reported that the Cubs are indeed talking about a Glasnow trade with the Rays.
As with most off-seasons, the Rays are in cost-cutting mode and Glasnow is a candidate to be moved considering he is set to earn $25MM in the final year of his contract.
That is where the value lies in Glasnow for the Cubs. There certainly is a risk with Glasnow as he has only pitched over 120 innings once in his career but that is a risk that the Cubs can afford to take next season. If this was a matter where the Cubs were looking for a long-term fixture at the top of their rotation, then, yes, there would need to be a much larger debate about whether or not Glasnow should be the target.
But for one season while absorbing most if not all of the $25MM that he will be owed for the 2024 season, it's a trade that the Cubs should have no regrets making.
The Cubs are in a unique position with regard to their starting pitching need as they have Jordan Wicks already showing in an early sample size that he can be an effective starting pitcher at the Major League Level while top prospects Ben Brown and Cade Horton should also be ready by the end of the 2024 season. Not to mention, if the Cubs are successful in their targeting of Shohei Ohtani, Ohtani will become their ace when he returns to the pitching mound in 2025.
