Desperate times call for desperate measures. That is the only way to describe the Chicago Cubs' roster moves on Sunday morning.

After a rain-logged victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, the Cubs will attempt to ride that momentum into the final game a of three-game set against their National League Central counterpart this weekend,

Reinforcements have arrived for a scuffling Cubs' offense.

The Cubs have recalled fan-favorite David Bote from the Triple-A Iowa and added Bote to the 40-man roster. In the corresponding move, Nick Madrigal was optioned to Triple-A while Adbert Alzolay was transferred to the 60-day IL.

The last time that Bote was seen at the Major League level with the Cubs was at the end of the 2022 season. The Cubs outrighted Bote from the 40-man roster after the 2022 season and routinely overlooked the veteran infielder for much of the past two seasons despite a need at third base.

Whether it was Madrigal or Miles Mastrobuoni, the Cubs' bench options this season have left much to be desired. Bote does offer more positional flexibility than Madrigal and his power against righties offers more value to a Cubs' team struggling to hit the ball over the fence than anything Madrigal has provided the team since 2021.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Ben Brown will be making the start for the Cubs after an excellent outing against the Milwaukee Brewers in his last start. Brown tossed seven no-hit innings against the Brewers, making the case that he should remain in the team's rotation.
  • Southpaw Nick Lodolo will get the start for the Reds on Sunday, Lodolo has a 3.12 ERA through 7 starts this season.
