The struggles of Adbert Alzolay seemingly reached the point of no return during the team's 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon.
Alzolay entered Sunday's game, albeit because he was one of the few options remaining in a game entering extra innings, in a relatively low-leverage situation as the Cubs were up 5-2 in the 10th inning against one one the league's worst offenses.
Almost as if it was a challenge, Alzolay wasted no time in making it a high-leverage situation as he immediately allowed a 2-run home run to bring the Pirates to within one run of tying the game.
Alzolay was able to record the three outs in order to secure the victory for the Cubs, but the home run allowed was a reminder that he can not be trusted in any appearance with an ounce of leverage. Therefore, it should be no surprise that before the team's game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, the Cubs placed Alzolay on the Illinois with a forearm strain.
Given the struggles that Alzolay has had this season, no matter the situation, it would seem likely that this IL stint will extend beyond 15 days.
Probable starting pitchers
- The next test for Shota Imanaga will be one of the best teams in the National League as the Cubs open a three-game set against the Braves in Atlanta on Monday night. Not only is Imanaga making a strong case to be the National League Rookie of the Year, he is making a case for the Cy Young award given his 1.08 ERA.
- Reynaldo Lopez is on the mound for the Atlanta Braves and Lopez is experiencing the success in the starting rotation this season that evaded him during his time with the Chicago White Sox. Lopez has a 1.53 ERA on the season through 6 starts.
