On Wednesday night, a dramatic walk-off home run off the bat of Mike Tauchman delivered the Chicago Cubs a desperately needed series sweep of the lowly White Sox. Now, the club takes the show on the road, matching up with the Cincinnati Reds for a four-game weekend series.

Last weekend at Wrigley, the Reds took two of three from Chicago in a series that felt important for a Cubs team that continues to spin its wheels. After scoring 14 runs against the Sox in a two-game set, the hope is that the offense is starting to wake up from its five-week slumber.

Tauchman, Ian Happ and Patrick Wisdom all boast an OPS north of 1.000 over the last seven days, with Dansby Swanson and Christopher Morel both over .900. It's not all sunshine and roses, though. Key pieces like Nico Hoerner and Cody Bellinger have gone cold of late. This team has yet to hit on all cylinders, but the hope is that turnaround is on the horizon.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Javier Assad takes the ball for the Cubs in the series opener Thursday night looking for a different result than he got last weekend against this same Reds team. He turned in 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball, but the bullpen couldn't shut the door in a 5-4 Cincinnati victory. He's been better at home than on the road, but a 2.90 ERA away from Wrigley is still well above average.
  • Hard-throwing right-hander Hunter Greene starts opposite Assad looking for his fourth win of the season. His last time out, the Cubs roughed him up for five earned over six innings of work, despite tallying just three hits. Five walks proved costly for him and Greene leads the league with eight hit by pitches on the year.
