The Chicago Cubs had their bats explode with power in the minor leagues yesterday, even if the pitching performances were a little less than stellar.

Iowa Cubs (AAA) (69-49)

The Iowa Cubs beat the Indianapolis Indians 10-4

The Cubs continued their incredible season with a big win over the Indians yesterday. They gave up four runs, but not before they’d already built an insurmountable 6-0 lead. In fact even after they gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth, they turned around to score four of their own and make it 10-2 in the top of the seventh.

Jake Slaughter (3B) went 2-for-5 with a single, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.

Matt Mervis (1B) went 2-for-4 with a single, a home run, a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. It’s nice to see him accessing the power again and he could potentially be in for a return to Wrigley when rosters expand.

Alexander Canario (OF) went 2-for-4 with a single, a home run, two RBI and a run scored.

Shane Greene (RHP) continued to be stretched out as a starter and went five scoreless innings in this one. He gave up four hits and a walk while striking out six to lower his ERA since joining the Cubs to 2.84.

Cam Sanders (RHP) finished out the game with 1.2 scoreless innings and gave up just two hits and struck out two.

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (65-49)

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Chattanooga Lookouts 8-2

The Smokies took the loss as they weren’t able score a run after the first inning. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but coughed it up in the bottom of the third as the Lookouts took a 4-2 lead and never looked back.

Haydn McGeary (1B) went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

BJ Murray (3B) went 1-for-3 with his 25th double of the season, a walk and an RBI.

Jordan Nwogu (OF) went 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks, coming off of a week where he was named the Southern League player of the week

Chris Kachmar (RHP) wasn’t great yesterday. He lasted 2.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out four.

Blake Whitney (RHP) had the lone positive pitching performance as he pitched the last two innings of the game and only gave up one hit and one walk while striking out one.

South Bend Cubs (A+) (50-63)

The South Bend Cubs beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-3

South Bend is the only team in the system that just can’t seem to put it all together on the field and win baseball games. Every team is above .500 except for South Bend but hopefully, that could end with a strong finish led by this impressive 6-3 win.

James Triantos (2B) went 2-for-4 with a double, a single and an RBI.

Ed Howard (SS) went 3-for-4 with three singles and three RBI. This performance increased the former first round pick’s  batting average to .204 on the year.

Moises Ballesteros (C) continued to be a monster. He went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. He’s hitting .307 as a teenage catcher in High-A.

Matt Shaw (SS) went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored. The 2023 first round pick is hitting .358 at High-A and could soon follow Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes with a promotion to AA, although a promotion to the majors like Nolan Schanuel is unlikely.

Tyler Santana (RHP) was solid yesterday. He pitched five innings and only gave up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (66-48)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 9-8

Myrtle Beach won this one in extra innings after tying it up in the bottom of the ninth. It was a great team win and while the pitching performances across the board left much to be desired, there were stellar performances from hitters drafted in 2023 and signed via international free agency.

Rafael Morel (CF) filled the stat sheet by going 2-for-6 with a home run, a single, a stolen base, two RBI and a run scored.

Jefferson Rojas (SS) went 2-for-6 with two doubles, a stolen base and a run scored.

Brett Bateman (OF) went 2-for-4 with two singles, two walks and two runs scored. He’s now batting .318 on the season.

Jonathan Long (3B) was a beast yesterday. He went 4-for-5 with a double, three singles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Keon Moreno (RHP) was the starting pitcher and gave up two runs over three innings on three hits, two walks and he struck out two.
