MiLB.com recently released their Player of the Week honors for the week of August 14th to August 20th and Chicago Cubs prospect Jordan Nwogu was the representative for the position players in the Southern League (AA).
It’s clear that this is not a season-long award as Nwogu has not quite lived up to expectations this season as he has hit just .192/.275/.664 which are all lower than his career averages. That being said, it’s good to see him battle through a less-than-stellar season and continue to work as he managed to put together a flat-out phenomenal week last week.
In five games Nwogu went 9-for-17 with two doubles, five RBI, five runs scored, and as many homers as strikeouts (3). He’s had a much better August as a whole as he’s increased his slash line to .255/.328/.582 and started to find the power a bit with five of his 15 home runs for the season coming this month.
It would be nice to see him continue to drive the ball with authority as the season comes to a close and even better yet if we could see him start to draw a couple of walks. That part of his game continues to lag behind everything else as he’s struck out six times more often (24) than he’s walked (4) this month.
If those things can come together and he can have some power surges like he had last week, then the Cubs could have another prospect worth thinking about in this already-loaded system.
