The Chicago Cubs' loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday was a sign of the team being comfortable with where they are in the National League Wild Card race. The Cubs took Cade Horton out of the game despite the rookie sensation having a no-hitter through five innings pitched, and featured a lineup that did not include Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker.

Even with the loss, the Cubs remain the team to beat in the National League Wild Card. The Cubs have a 5-game lead over the New York Mets for the final wild card spot, and 4 games separate them from the San Diego Padres. If the postseason started today, the Cubs would host all three games of a National League Wild Card series against the Padres.

It's a different position than what the Cubs were facing in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, the Cubs were overtaken as the last wild card team in the National League and spent the final weeks of September trying to climb back into the race. Last September, the Cubs were an afterthought in the wild-card race.

Cubs’ calm approach to Wild Card race is driving fans crazy

The trauma from 2023 is likely the reason why Cubs fans have anxiety when watching the team this September. That anxiety is uncalled for. We're almost certainly testing the fate of Cubbie Occurrences, but the Cubs are a virtual lock to reach the postseason. Looking past their lead over the Mets, the Cubs have a 10-game advantage over the Cincinnati Reds, the first team on the outside of the National League playoff picture.

That is the reason why Counsell seemingly left a win on the table on Wednesday night. The battle for the Cubs is not winning as many games between now and the end of the season. The battle is making sure the roster is ready for October. The decisions involved in that goal include Counsell affording Crow-Armstrong the opportunity for a reset, and not forcing the issue when it comes to Tucker's calf. And beyond that, making sure Horton is ready to be a member of the Cubs' postseason rotation.
