Kyle Tucker played an important part in the Chicago Cubs' 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. Tucker's three-run home run got the Cubs' scoring started in the third inning, and it was a reminder that when he is healthy, he very much is the difference maker in the Cubs' starting lineup. It seems, however, that Tucker's health may be in question once again.
Tucker was removed from the game, and afterward, Craig Counsell revealed to reporters that the All-Star right fielder is dealing with a calf injury. Counsell already informed the team's beat that Tucker will not be in the lineup for their Wednesday night game against the Braves, and with Thursday being an off day, the Cubs have some time before deciding if any further measure is needed for the veteran outfielder.
How Counsell and the Cubs are handling this latest injury to Tucker is a sign of how things have changed from earlier this season. Despite Tucker dealing with a hairline fracture in his hand earlier this season, the Cubs kept the information sealed until it reached a breaking point.
Cubs get cautious with Kyle Tucker as magic number shrinks
Circumstances have changed since then, and it's likely tied to the Cubs' magic number. Entering play on Wednesday, the Cubs' magic number to secure the top spot in the National League wild-card is 14. Given that securing the No. 4 seed in the playoffs would mean the Cubs hosting the wild-card series at Wrigley Field, there is added importance for the team to remain on track.
The good news is that the Cubs are in a comfortable spot, holding a 4-game lead over the San Diego Padres. In other words, there is room for the Cubs to be cautious with how they are handling Tucker. Again, a healthy Tucker could be the difference for the Cubs once the playoffs start. For that reason, it makes sense for Tucker to have these next two days off before the Cubs determine if an IL trip is needed.
