It's been made clear that there is no love lost between Chicago Cubs fans and Los Angeles Dodgers fans. Pete Crow-Armstrong was Public Enemy No. 1 in LA this past weekend, but a new Dodgers player may hold that reputation for Cubs fans, and Nico Hoerner may have just provided confirmation of that fact.
Initially, it seemed like Cubs fans may have been reaching with their lip-reading skills over the weekend. After failing to throw Miguel Amaya out at second base, Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing seemed to call the Cubs catcher a "fat f***".
Honestly, in the moment, it felt like Cubs fans trying to make something out of nothing. What lent credence to the idea that Rushing may have insulted Amaya was Hoerner's reaction. Whatever Rushing said clearly caught the attention of the Cubs second baseman.
Hoerner was on the Spiegel & Holmes Show on Tuesday, and confirmed that Cubs fans had it correct with what Rushing mouthed to Amaya.
"Yeah," Hoerner replied. "I wish that I had confronted him a little more directly, to be honest. I was pretty taken aback. It was just kind of a strange thing to experience, so yeah, I felt a little weird about that. [...] I'm not saying I should've tackled the guy or anything, but still. At the end of the day, you just wanna have your teammates' backs."
Move over Kyler Tucker, there's a new Dodgers player to hate
Between Crow-Armstrong drawing the ire of Dodgers fans and Kyle Tucker from Cubs fans, the rivalry between the two teams has reached a new level this season. In part, it could be due to the Cubs posing as a true threat to Los Angeles this season. That being said, what Rushing did is beyond the level of a sports rivalry.
Rushing is essentially Buzz from Home Alone. He causes unnecessary drama, not just with the Cubs, and when he's caught, the young rookie tries to gaslight his way through an explanation. It's only a matter of time before Rushing's antic catch up with him and the Dodgers. Sure, they still are the Dodgers and are the favorites to win the World Series, but that won't stop opposing teams from trying to humble the petulant child Rushing appears to be.
Along those lines, Cubs fans probably will enjoy the karma that Rushing received on Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins when he was called out due to a pitch-clock violation. You love to see it.
