The MLB Winter Meetings will be underway one week from today where it would seem likely that the Chicago Cubs will continue to trade talks that they may have started at the GM meetings last month.

Creativity is going to define the Cubs' offseason as it remains laughable that the organization is avoiding the deep end of the free-agent waters this winter. Among the takeaways at the GM meetings last month was the report that Owen Caissie was among the most popular players mentioned in trade talks.

Depending on the outcome of the Cubs' desperation to trade Cody Bellinger, Caissie likely is being tabbed for a spot on the Major League roster in 2025. While Caissie may not be among the players discussed at the Winter Meetings, there could be a surprise.

Jacob Zanolla of Ivy League Cubs mentioned on Saturday that teams have called to express interest in Javier Assad and Jordan Wicks.

With the Cubs looking to add an established starting pitcher near the top of their rotation, it would seem that the route they would take in accomplishing that goal would be through trade. If the Cubs are going to trade for an impact starting pitcher under team control for multiple seasons ahead, it would make sense that one of Assad or Wicks would be included in the deal.

Assad thrived in the rotation last season but there are some red flags that hint at regression coming his way during the 2025 season. Assad would likely be the man to shift to the bullpen with the arrival of a new starting pitcher and considering the other young arms the Cubs have reaching the top of their organization, it stands to reason he could be included in a deal with a team such as the Seattle Mariners.

Injuries derailed Wicks' 2024 season as he posted a 5.48 ERA through 11 appearances (10 starts). There wouldn't be a reason for the Cubs to give up on Wicks this soon but if the right pitcher is available, the 2021 first-round pick could be a valued piece of the package offered by the Cubs.
