After winning two straight upon the return of Juan Soto, the New York Mets are looking to put their worst losing streak in more than 20 years behind them and quickly make up ground in the standings - and are promoting former Chicago Cubs hurler Carl Edwards Jr. in hopes of adding a fresh arm to the mix.
He's made just five total appearances at the MLB level over the last two years, but is just three years removed from a solid 2024 campaign as a member of the Washington Nationals when he posted a 3.69 ERA in 32 appearances.
Needing some fresh pitching help, the Mets are promoting Carl Edwards Jr., league sources said, and optioning Christian Scott, last night’s starter.

The Mets optioned Christian Scott, who started for the team Thursday in his return from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander battled major control issues, lasting just 11/3 innings and walking five. Just 18 of his 43 pitches found the strike zone.
Edwards, meanwhile, has a 5.29 ERA in four starts with the Mets' Triple-A affiliate this year. Funnily enough, the lanky righty has never started a game at the big-league level, with all 300 of his appearances with eight different clubs coming out of the bullpen.
Carl Edwards Jr. was a Joe Maddon favorite during 2016 World Series run
Edwards Jr. made his MLB debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2015, but became an essential cog in the team's bullpen during its run to the World Series the following year. From 2016-18, he made 167 appearances for the North Siders, working to a 3.03 ERA and 12.42 K/9.
Of course, he was the reliever Mike Montgomery came in for during the infamous tenth inning of Game 7 in 2016 - and the image of him running across Progressive Field with the 'W' flag blowing behind him won't soon be forgotten by Cubs fans.
We wish him all the best. After all, the Cubs just swept the Mets and don't see them again for nearly two months. Hopefully there's a little more gas left in the tank of the Stringbean Slinger.
