Chicago Cubs fans try their best not to think about Daniel Descalso considering how miserable his free agent signing was in 2019.

In an offseason in which the Cubs were forced to limit their spending despite Bryce Harper and Manny Machado being available, Descalso was the primary position player addition to the Cubs' roster in 2019.

What the Cubs did not know is that the 2019 season served as Descalso's retirement tour. During the 2019 season, Descalso slashed .173/.271/.250 with an OPS+ of 38. It was Descalso's final season at the Major League level.

In many ways, Descalso's signing was the beginning of a trend for the Cubs. Since the failed signing of Descalso, the Cubs continued serving as a retirement tour for disappointing veterans such as Trey Mancini and Eric Hosmer. Tucker Barnhart is still in the Majors but his signing was just as bad as the previous three.

Former Cubs' free agency bust may return to the city.

Cubs fans may want to close their eyes as Descalso could be returning to Chicago.

Descalso is currently serving as the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals but he is among the candidates for the Chicago White Sox managerial opening. It's relatively early in Descalso's coaching career, and he has no managerial experience, but that didn't stop the White Sox from naming Grady Sizemore their interim manager at the end of the season. It's also worth pointing out that former Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa is still believed to be a voice of influence in the White Sox organization.

Given the transition the White Sox are going through, including a potential sale, they would probably be better off leaving Sizemore as their manager. The White Sox remain in the infancy stage of their rebuild and hiring someone like Descalso in place of Sizemore would be replacing one bridge manager with another.
