The Chicago Cubs' season has been defined by one injury after another within their pitching staff, and if we're being honest, it felt like only a matter of time before Edward Cabrera landed on the IL. That time may have arrived on Wednesday night.
Cabrera was removed in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers with an injury. It's unclear what the injury was, considering Cabrera was seen pacing around the mound before being visited by Craig Counsell and the Cubs' pitching staff.

Edward Cabrera's injury could have spelled doom for the Cubs
With Cade Horton out for the remainder of the 2026 season, Justin Steele until after the All-Star break, and Matthew Boyd for the next several weeks, the Cubs have already been faced with thinning pitching depth. If Cabrera was forced to miss a significant amount of time, it could spell disaster for the Cubs and their pitching plans.
The vibes surrounding the Cubs couldn't be any worse at the moment. The North Siders entered the series against the Brewers this week in first place in the National League Central only for the Brewers to be on the verge of sweeping them. A similar set of circumstances that plagued the Cubs during the closing months of the 2025 season when they had no answer for their biggest division rival.
Cabrera's injury wasn't the only low point in Wednesday's game. The Brewers' scoring got started on an error by Pete Crow-Armstrong that resulted in a little league home run. Given the controversy that has followed Crow-Armstrong this week, it seems clear that it's reached the point where he may need a reset. The Cubs are off on Thursday but it wouldn't be a complete surprise to see Crow-Armstrong out of the lineup on Friday against the Houston Astros.

Fortunately, it does sound like the Cubs avoided something more serious with Cabrera. The Cubs confirmed that Cabrera was removed from the game due to a blister. All things considered, it could have been worse. Cabrera should be able to make his next start, especially since there will be an added day of rest with the off day on Thursday.
Outside of Cabrera's injury scare, larger questions are still circling the Cubs. Questions that were exposed by how outmatched they looked against the Brewers this week.
