Chicago Cubs' pitchers and catchers have reported to spring training. While the week has been defined by surprise injuries across Major League Baseball, the update from Craig Counsell, Jed Hoyer, and Carter Hawkins included no surprise injury updates. There remains an expectation that Justin Steele will be placed on the 60-day IL in the coming days, but the focus from the opening press conferences was on the roster.

For the most part, the Cubs' Opening Day roster is set. There will be competitions for the final spot on the bench and in the bullpen, but the biggest question will center around roles on the pitching staff.

Cubs Spring Training Update: Craig Counsell wastes little time in naming the Cubs' Opening Day closer

Counsell was asked who would be the Cubs' closer to open the season, and wasted no time in naming Daniel Palencia.

As always, especially with Counsell, the closer's role in the Cubs' bullpen can be fluid. Palencia was the obvious answer. He thrived in the role last year before struggling toward the end of the regular season. Still, emerged as Counsell's go-to option during the playoffs, often turning to him first in high-leverage situations, regardless of the inning.

It's possible the Cubs still trade for a closer during the season, or someone like Hunter Harvey could prove to be an option, assuming he's healthy. For now, Palencia is the first man up.

Cubs Spring Training Update: Matt Shaw embracing new role as utility man

There's a growing expectation that the Cubs' Opening Day roster will include both Matt Shaw and Nico Hoerner. Hoerner's role on the 2026 Cubs is straightforward, the starting second baseman who has emerged as a clubhouse leader. Shaw, meanwhile, is going to serve in a utility role, likely seeing some time in the outfield.

After admittedly seeming confused by the Cubs' signing of Alex Bregman, Counsell made it seem like everyone was now on the same page.

One of the biggest areas of weakness for the Cubs over the last couple of years has been their bench. It's why there never should have been an urgency to trade Shaw. Shaw remains an important piece on the 2026 roster and could have a larger role in 2027.

Cubs Spring Training Update: Marquee Sports Network announces Spring Training schedule

As expected, there is a reduction in spring training games that will be broadcast on the Marquee Sports Network this year. A total of 11 spring training games will be available on the network that the Cubs own.

It's yet another reminder that the Cubs' long-term future on the network may not be secure. Whether that is joining the handful of teams that will have their games broadcast directly through Major League Baseball or merging with CHSN, it would seem that there will be options discussed.
