Before Seiya Suzuki suffered an injury scare against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, there was an uptick in trade speculation. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal suggested that the Cubs consider trading Suzuki before the trade deadline, and it was a layered conversation. Now, there's a direct rumor connecting the Cubs' outfielder to a National League contender.

USA Today's Bob Nighengale reports that the Philadelphia Phillies are "desperately looking" for outfield help in the aftermath of Adolis Garcia's injury, and their search has led to them to the Cubs. The MLB insider adds that the Phillies have Suzuki "on their radar".

First and foremost, Suzuki will need to prove to be healthy. The 31-year-old outfielder suffered a knee injury during the Cubs' victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. The Cubs are hopeful for good news, but it's worth noting that it's the same knee that Suzuki injured during the World Baseball Classic earlier this season.

Seiya Suzuki could be a trade chip, but there's an obvious hurdle

Generally, it makes sense that a contending team with a sudden need in the outfield would have interest in Suzuki. With how the Cubs have played over the past month, there's a chance that they could sell at the deadline. A free agent after this season, Suzuki would be one of the biggest trade chips the Cubs have to offer.

Where the idea loses steam is the optics of the Cubs trading Suzuki to the Phillies. Like the Cubs, the Phillies' path to the playoffs this year will likely be through the Wild Card. Even if the Cubs are interested in selling off pieces, chances are the larger goal would still be on reaching the playoffs. Along those lines, it doesn't really make sense for the Cubs to trade a Suzuki to a team ahead of them in the Wild Card race.

It's a reminder that there's a need to take a step back when rumors like these emerge. Again, there are clear reasons why the Phillies would want Suzuki. But the framing of Nightengale's report makes it seem that it's coming from somone with Philadelphia. In other words, it's still not even clear if the Cubs want to trade Suzuki.

Chances are the Cubs will have a similar approach with Suzuki that they had with Nico Hoerner during the offseason. They' listen, leaving open the chance that someone gets desperate, but they may ultimately prove to hold onto him, considering he makes the team better for this season.
