It's not just Chicago Cubs fans eagerly looking for clues on whether Alex Bregman will complete the team's offseason; it's the Cubs' players themselves.
Bregman was the topic of conversation at Cubs camp on Tuesday. Whether it was Jameson Taillon touching on the recruiting that may or may not be taking place from the former Astros who have joined the Cubs this offseason or Nicky Lopez already telling the All-Star third baseman of the Cubs' way, it was clear that it was the topic of conversation within the team's clubhouse.
Outside of the Cubs' players, Bregamn's agent, Scott Boras also broke his silence on where things stand while speaking with Jesse Rogers of ESPN.
"Among owners and teams it's a gold rush..the acquiring team immediately ... potentiates championship value," Boras updated.
Like him or not, Boras essentially highlighted the main reason why the Cubs are pursuing Bregman. Regardless of the high-ceiling Matt Shaw has, the fact is the addition of Bregman at third base doesn't just make the Cubs the overwhelming favorite to win the National League Central, it makes them, on paper, one of the best teams in the National League.
Scott Boras and the Cubs have been down this path before
Boras and the Cubs are no strangers to this process. An All-Star remaining on the market as Spring Training is starting is the scenario the two sides were working through when negotiating Cody Bellinger's return to the Cubs.
Sure, it's not an exact comparison being that Bellinger spent a season with the Cubs already. The difference, however, doesn't hide the fact that Bregman, like Bellinger, does not have the offer on the table that he expected to receive at the start of the offseason. That offer isn't coming either. FanSided's Robert Murray, while not naming a favorite, did indicate that it is looking less likely that Bregman signs a long-term deal this offseason. As long as that holds true, the odds would seemingly be in the Cubs' favor.
