With the impression being that the Chicago Cubs weren't going to bring back Kyle Tucker, Cubs fans have always felt like Cody Bellinger would be a dream reunion for the North Siders. Bellinger is capable of playing in the outfield and at first base, and wouldn't come at the price tag that Tucker is expected to carry.

There's no question that Bellinger quickly became a fan favorite while spending the 2023 and 2024 seasons in Chicago, and while there is still a sour taste left from the fact that the Cubs never used the money saved by trading him last offseason, a reunion never quite made sense.

A Cody Bellinger reunion with the Cubs is fun conjecture, but not based in reality.

With pitching being the priority for the Cubs this offseason and their roster already having a healthy amount of outfielders, the idea of Jed Hoyer and Co. meeting Bellinger's demands for a second time in the last three years feels like quite the reach. That would be the reason why the latest rumor from North Side Baseball's Matthew Trueblood should be taken with a grain of salt.

While highlighting that the Cubs are ready for their big move of the offseason after spending the last few weeks bargain-bin shopping to address their needs in the bullpen and on the bench, Trueblood reports that signing Bellinger is among the possibilities the Cubs are considering. As was the case the last time Bellinger was a free agent, there's a belief his market could stall, and as they've done before, the Cubs may look for an opportunistic deal.

It's important to note that signing Bellinger was just one of the big-move possibilities that Trueblood suggested was on the table for the Cubs. The other moves being signing someone from the group of Tatsuya Imai, Zac Gallen, Alex Bregman, Munetaka Murakami, or Kazuma Okamoto. Bellinger included, there's a sense that the Cubs could come away from the offseason with one of those six players.

It's worth pointing out that Scott Boras represents all of those players except Murakami. As such, the odds would seemingly be in favor of the Cubs signing someone represented by Boras this offseason. Therefore, it stands to reason the Cubs may be willing to let Boras use them as a leveraging tactic for Bellinger's market. Not saying that the Cubs aren't interested in Bellinger on some level, they very well could be if his price drops, but this seems to be a ploy from Boras while having the New York Yankees and New York Mets bid against each other.

If nothing else, there are still plenty of options on the table for the Cubs this offseason. There's still time for them to have a successful offseason, but patience is starting to wear thin.
