Once the Chicago Cubs named Matthew Boyd the Game 1 starting pitcher for their National League Wild Card series against the San Diego Padres, there weren't many questions left regarding the roster the team would construct. With Game 1 on Tuesday afternoon, the Cubs have released their roster in addition to posting their starting lineup.

Given the shortened three-game series, there's no surprise that the Cubs are carrying more position players than pitchers. On the position player side of the roster, three notable omissions are catcher Miguel Amaya, veteran speedster Billy Hamilton, and rookie outfielder Owen Caissie.

Amaya ended the season on a rehab assignment from a freak ankle injury in August and was believed to have participated in the team's practice on Monday. Caissie finished the season in the concussion protocol, and the Cubs have yet to reveal if he has been cleared to return. Meanwhile, signing with the Cubs at the start of September, Hamilton was speculated to be a last-minute addition to the Cubs bench, given his speed.

Kyle Tucker playing through a calf injury is the likely reason why Kevin Alcantara made the roster over Hamilton. In the event that there is an injury to one of the Cubs' starting outfielders, Alcantara would be the better option than an aging Hamilton.

The Cubs have also posted their starting lineup for Tuesday's Game 1 against the Padres.

With the Padres starting Nick Pivetta, there was some speculation that the Cubs may look for a way to sneak Justin Turner into the lineup. Turner has had some success against Pivetta over the course of his career, 2 home runs and 2 doubles, but he will start the series on the bench.

As expected, Tucker opens the series as the designated hitter with Seiya Suzuki in right field. There remains a chance that Tucker returns to the outfield if the Cubs go on an extended playoff run, but for now, Suzuki gets the nod in right field.

Barring an injury, the Cubs' Wild Card roster is set. Of course, veteran first baseman Carlos Santana is on the team's taxi squad, and likely would be the next man up in the event of an injury to one of the Cubs position players.
