Cade Horton won't be making the start for the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 against the San Diego Padres, and the team has officially announced his replacement. Matthew Boyd will be on the bump for the Cubs on Tuesday as they open their National League Wild Card series. On the mound for the Padres will be Nick Pivetta.

The decision to sign Boyd looked like a stroke of genius for Jed Hoyer during the first half of the season. Boyd was named to the National League All-Star game while posting an ERA of 2.34 in 111 and 2/3 innings pitched.

The Second half of the season told a different story for Boyd as he pitched to an ERA of 4.63 during his last 68 innings pitched. The struggles that Boyd faced during the closing months of the season were believed to be tied to the fact that 2025 marked the most innings he has pitched in a season since 2019.

Cubs name Matthew Boyd as Game 1 starter after losing Cade Horton

Boyd has had tremendous success in the postseason, and his run with the Guardians last October is likely what put him on the Cubs' radar. In 4 career appearances in the postseason, Boyd has only allowed 1 run in 12 innings pitched while striking out 14. Certainly, the Cubs will be hoping that Boyd can channel that success in his start on Tuesday.

With Boyd regressing, Horton on the IL, and Shota Imanaga struggling with the home run ball to end the season, there was speculation that the Cubs could turn to an opener for Game 1. It would have been a bold choice, but one that Craig Counsell isn't a stranger to. It wouldn't be a complete surprise if Boyd has a short leash in his start with one of Colin Rea or Michael Soroka serving as the piggy-back option.

It would seem likely that Imanaga will serve as the Cubs' Game 2 starter with Jameson Taillon getting the nod if a Game 3 is needed.
