The Chicago Cubs have won two consecutive series after going the previous month without one, and Pete Crow-Armstrong once again looks like a clear National League MVP candidate. Add in that the Cubs went 4-8 with runners in scoring position during their victory on Wednesday over the Colorado Rockies, and it was a reminder of what the season could still be.

Of course, beating the worst team in baseball is a very small bar to clear. For a Cubs team that entered the 2026 season with World Series expectations, they are going to need a lot more than a pair of victories over the Rockies to prove they are back.

Crow-Armstrong is aware of that reality, revealing that he's not buying into the idea that the Cubs have turned a corner from their previous struggles.

"I'm not gonna buy into that yet, I want to keep stacking (wins). I think what I'm happiest about is coming out after a loss and getting a W the next day. I think that's what was really consistent about this team last year and really strong and important."

Beyond his play, Pete Crow-Armstrong is becoming the Cubs' true leader

It's refreshing honest. In a time when Cubs fans are growing frustrated with the how the likes of Jed Hoyer, Ian Happ, and Dansby Swanson talk about the team's struggles, Crow-Armstrong isn't afraid to say what everyone is thinking. No one is buying that the Cubs are truly back just because they beat the Giants and Rockies in consecutive series.

Of course, it helps that Crow-Armstrong is once again carrying the offense. The Cubs' center fielder has a home run in each of his last three games, and his wRC+ on the season is up to 137. Crow-Armstrong's fWAR is at 4.1, and scanning his Baseball Savant page, he's clear made clear adjustments from last season and this version could be slightly more sustainable.

The true test for the Cubs is in front of them. Their next two series are against the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets, two teams who are under .500 but a clear step up in talent from what they faced over the past week. After that, it's series against the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and St. Louis Cardinals. We'll know by the first week of July if the Cubs have truly put the past six weeks behind them.
