While highlighting the drama between the Boston Red Sox and Rafael Devers, we pointed out that the idea of the Chicago Cubs trading for Devers doesn't quite make sense.
Devers, in theory, would be a a third baseman by trade but despite having superstar level offensive production, the Red Sox still felt compelled to add a third baseman this offseason in Alex Bregman. Part of the allure of adding Bregman for the Red Sox, and the Cubs had they made a competitive offer, is that not only are you adding an impact bat to your lineup, you're getting quality defense at third base.
With the Cubs' offense recognized as one of the best in Major League Baseball this season, the team doesn't need an impact bat at third base. Part of the reason why the Cubs' weakness at third base this season has been so egregious is that the defense has been atrocious at the position. In a world where Matt Shaw is not the answer at third base for the Cubs this season, and they look for an external solution, the team will likely look for someone who can be a capable defender at the position. Devers doesn't check that box, and for that reason alone, a trade isn't within the realm of possibility this offseason.
It's also why the Cubs likely wouldn't be willing to meet the asking price the Red Sox would likely have if they were to, in theory, make Devers available. That is why this proposal can be laughed at.
There is some irony in the Cubs having "a major hole" at third base, and then the prized prospect they are giving up in the deal is Shaw, their leading third base candidate who has under 100 plate appearances at the Major League level. Beyond Shaw, the Cubs are giving up another one of their Top 10 prospects in Moises Ballesteros.
Considering the age of Devers, the fact that the Cubs would likely be taking on the contract in a potential deal, and the projection of Devers as a designated hitter, that is an insanely high asking price for the Cubs. By principle, a Devers trade doesn't quite make sense for the Cubs. At that asking price, the Cubs would likely join Devers in mocking Craig Breslow.
