Braves' collapse might’ve just given the Cubs a golden opportunity

The Atlanta Braves had a collapse on Thursday that rivaled their meltdown against the Chicago Cubs in 2018. Despite entering the final frame of Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 10-4 lead, the Braves had an epic moment of incompetence that resulted in an 11-10 loss. The Braves are turning to former Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel in the immediate aftermath of that loss, but the long-term outlook could have an impact on the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.

Entering play on Friday, the Braves are 11 games behind the New York Mets for first place in the American League East. The Wild Card race isn't a prettier picture for the Braves either, as they are currently 7 games out of the race. With the trade deadline becoming the prevailing topic of conversation for Major League teams, the Braves' misfortunes this season could have them become a surprise seller in July.

If that's the case, the Braves could be a near-perfect trade partner for the Cubs. The expectation remains that the Cubs will add a top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher before July 31, and the Braves could be the team they turn to.

The Braves just gifted the Cubs a great trade opportunity

Given the extensions that the Braves have made with their current roster, there aren't many players who likely would be of interest for the Cubs. However, the one player who would be, is a golden chance for the Cubs to address their biggest need.

Chris Sale's current deal with the Braves includes a club option for 2026, meaning he is one of the few players Atlanta could move without the opposing team having to take on a large commitment for future seasons. Given that Sale is one season removed from winning the National League Cy Young Award, adding in his contract status, he would instantly become the top starting pitcher available on the trade market. Through 13 starts this season, Sale has an ERA of 2.93 with a fastball velocity being the fastest it's been in years.

For a Cubs team that needs another frontline starting pitcher, Sale would easily check that box.
