Given the health of the Chicago Cubs' farm system, there likely isn't going to be any trade target who is out of their reach. Whether it's a target like Sandy Alcantara, who is under team control beyond this season, or a rental starting pitcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cubs will have the means to make any move they desire.

Of course, you know the headliners that would potentially be involved in any trade involving the Cubs. One of Kevin Alcantara or Owen Caissie seems likely to be moved before the trade deadline, and the same can be said for James Triantos. Depending on the trade, Moises Ballesteros likely isn't entirely untouchable, but having said that, he likely won't be moved for a rental.

The names at the front of a potential Cubs' offer, in any trade, are known. However, several prospects may quietly have value to other Major League teams.

3 Cubs prospects could be unsung trade chips

  • Jonathon Long

It's no secret that the Cubs are set when it comes to their infield at the Major League level. Michael Busch, Nico Hoerner, Matt Shaw, and Dansby Swanson likely will be the starting infield for multiple seasons ahead. Not to mention, for this season, the Cubs have Justin Turner, Vidal Bruján, and Jon Berti on their bench.

For that reason, Jonathon Long would seem like a candidate to be included in any trade. Long's 155 wRC+ in Triple-A this season likely has gotten the attention of teams looking to do business with the Cubs in the weeks ahead.

  • Brandon Birdsell

Entering Spring Training, Brandon Birdsell was viewed as a pitching prospect who could prove to have an important role in the Cubs' bullpen at the Major League level. Instead, a shoulder injury has forced him to miss the opening months of the 2025 season. He remains the Cubs' No. 8 prospect and will be knocking on the door of being ready once he's healthy. That likely will have teams interested.

  • Juan Tomas

Juan Tomas was one of the prized signings of the Cubs' 2025 international free agency class. Given that some scouts have floated out "Elly De La Cruz" as a potential player comp, Tomas could be an intriguing prospect for the Cubs to include in a potential deal.
