With the Silver Slugger award finalists revealed, it feels like an appropriate time to look back in the history of the Chicago Cubs and recognize some of the franchise's most storied Silver Slugger award winners.

The Cubs' recent history with the Silver Slugger awards may not be as joyous as Cubs fans may believe it to be. The Cubs' 2016 World Series core included notable sluggers in Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Kyle Schwarber. One may be quick to suggest that there were multiple Silver Slugger awards handed out to that core of players, but in reality, Rizzo in 2016 and Baez in 2018 were the only seasons where that was the case.

The Cubs' run of dominance in terms of Silver Slugger award winners was actually in the 1980s and 1990s. A fine place to start when looking at the players with the most Silver Slugger awards in Chicago Cubs' history.

Ryne Sandberg, 7-time winner

The late Ryne Sandberg is the most accomplished Silver Slugger in the history of the Cubs, winning the award seven times during his run as the Cubs' starting second baseman. Between 1984 and 1992, the only two seasons in which Sandberg did not win the award were in 1986 and 1987. Sandberg's 1990 season marked an impressive mark, hitting 40 home runs while posting a wRC+ of 142.

Sammy Sosa, 6-time winner

Sammy Sosa's run with the Cubs in the late 1990s and 2000s defined a generation of Cubs fans. Recently welcomed back to the Cubs' organization, fans have been flooded with memories of the mammoth home runs Sosa hit at Wrigley Field. Sosa's 1998 season and his home run chase with Mark McGwire a moment etched in baseball history.

Carlos Zambrano, 3-time winner

That is right, after Sandberg and Sosa, it's a pitcher with the most Silver Slugger awards for the Cubs. Zambrano was one of the best hitting pitchers of his time, winning the Silver Slugger award in 2006, 2008, and 2009. In 2008 specifically, Zambrano slashed .337/.337/.554 with 4 home runs.
