Chicago Cubs: 4 prospects who could make an impact soon – #3: Caleb Kilian

Recently acquired as part of the Kris Bryant trade, Caleb Kilian. Kilian started the year in High-A for the Eugene Emeralds, the San Francisco Giants’ affiliate. After posting a 1.25 ERA and going 3-0 in 21 2/3 innings of work, Kilian quickly rose to Double-A Richmond. There, he started 11 more games, going 3-2 while posting a still well above-average 2.43 ERA.

After the trade that broke the hearts of Cubs fans everywhere, Kilian headed south to play Double-A ball for the Tennessee Smokies. So far, he has only pitched 5 2/3 innings to go along with a 3.18 ERA. Between Richmond and Tennessee, he has a combined 2.49 ERA in pretty decent sample size of 68 2/3 frames on the season.

I personally believe Kilian will be one of the more successful prospects in the Cubs farm system. On August 8, he threw five innings, giving up two earned while striking out three. He currently has a WHIP of 0.93. As Kilian rolls along, it won’t be long before he gets the call to head to Iowa.

If not for the pandemic, he would most likely already be at the Triple-A level, as would a lot of prospects. It’s good to see a young arm succeeding in the Cubs system. According to MLB.com, his big league ETA is 2022.
