All chalk in the Mesa Region, like Sandberg, Grace, Reuschel, and Sosa take out their opponents and make it to the Sweet 16. As some of the most noteworthy and easily identifiable Cubs to modern fans, this bracket has been set up for some great stand-offs over the next couple of rounds. Sandberg and Sosa seemed destined to meet in the Regional Final out in Mesa. Still, you never know how things will play out, especially as Sosa’s off the field antics and the way he left the club have sullied some of his reputation and exploits while in uniform.
Mark Grace led all of MLB in the 1990s with 1754 base hits, and Rick Reuschel was one of the most underrated hurlers of the 1970s. While they may not have been the Hall of Famer Sandberg and eventual Hall of Famer Sosa were in their playing days, they’re no slouches at this point in the Cubs Tourney. Here’s how things shake out in the Mesa Bracket going forward:
- One seed Ryne Sandberg vs. four seed Mark Grace
- Two seed Sammy Sosa vs. three seed Rick Reuschel
