Chicago Cubs: Getting his feet wet

Since joining the organization, McAvene has made two very brief starts for the Low-A Short Season Eugene Emeralds. The team wanted to get him going without giving him too much work to start, which is why the two starts cover just three innings.

However, McAvene could not have gotten off to a better start in his professional career. He has faced 12 batters without allowing a hit or a walk with five strikeouts mixed in. Oddly, McAvene did hit three of the nine batters he faced in his last appearance, but the control aspect should hopefully work itself out.

In a piece from MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian from June, McAvene gave insight to his feelings on being drafted by the Cubs and what that means to him.

“I had known that the Cubs were really highly interested in me. To know that that was the team that decided that they wanted to bring me into the organization is just an amazing feeling.”

Next. Who is the Cubs next man up?. dark

Cubs fans should be excited at the prospect of McAvene as it sounds like its wheels up for the 21-year-old righty. He is off to a fantastic start for the Emeralds, and hopefully, it will only continue to morph into something great for his future with the team.
