The Chicago Cubs head back to Wrigley this weekend to take on the Cincinnati Reds after recently losing the last road series against the NL Central Division’s Red menace team. Who’s got the edge this weekend?
Why? Why is it that the Chicago Cubs can beat just about every hot team out there but can’t win a series against the last place team in the NL Central Division? The Reds have gotten hot since winning the last three-game series against the Cubs. The Reds went on to take one from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a shutout (0-4) and then split a two-gamer with the Milwaukee Brewers.
It hasn’t helped move them up in the standings and they’ve only won (5-5) of their last 10 games, but this team turns it on for the Cubs. Maybe being the Division’s last-place losers doesn’t sit well with the Reds as was reported by Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the last time they met the Cubs. Third Baseman Eugenio Suarez was vocal about the team’s discontent.
"“We don’t care who is in first place,” Suárez said. “We just play hard and try to win games. It doesn’t matter who is here. We have a really good team. Everybody knows that.”"
If I didn’t know better fellas, I’d say that sounds like smack talk and a challenge!
Again I ask, “Why?”
Why do we sit down for the last place team, whose superstar first baseman, Joey Votto isn’t performing to expectation? It seems the only real weapon the Reds have to throw at the Cubs is the guy throwing the wicked changeups at us; pitcher, Luis Castillo.
