Chicago Cubs: Receiving the call?

Following another fantastic performance on Saturday from the 21-year-old, in which he hit his first home run, Hoerner is killing it. Sure, the sample size for him is still minute. However, Hoerner is now 5-for-6 with a home run and three RBI.

He is batting .833 with an OBP of .889 and an OPS of 2.722. Of course, these are unsustainable statistics and his home run, for instance, came off reliever Ryan Clark. Spring training can be a far cry from legitimate numbers relative to the regular season; however, what Hoerner has accomplished in his short amount of time is impressive.

In the same piece from Anthony Castrovince, Maddon gave more thoughts on Hoerner.

"“He’s not far away. If he catches the ball as well as everybody says he does and is able to work at-bats like we’ve seen, he’s not far off.”"

The Cubs are in an interesting position moving into the new season. Javier Baez will be taking over the shortstop duties while Russell serves out the remainder of his suspension. Second base should be handled by a combination of Ben Zobrist, Daniel Descalso, and possibly Ian Happ.

Russell himself has had a solid spring. However, it would be in the best interest of the Cubs to keep Baez at shortstop even after Russell returns. That being said, with the uncertainty of Zobrist and Descalso which come with aging players, and the inexperience of Happ in the infield, there is an outside chance Hoerner earns a call to the Show in August or September, based on how he is producing.
