The Chicago Cubs are in Mesa preparing for the 2019 season. We’ve seen the PECOTA projections. Ignore them. We’ve got some Cubs to watch for MVP potential and more in today’s Morning Marquee.

Last season, the Chicago Cubs got a much-needed jolt from Javier Baez who finished second in the NL MVP vote. The Cubs have several candidates, with the usual suspects, included. But who could be a potential surprise on the list? We knew Baez had talent, but not many thought he would elevate his game to that level. But who might be the next to take that step?

Every year, PECOTA makes predictions. Often it gives an idea of how an individual will perform, but they still provide a team prediction. The Cubs? Dead last in the Central at 80-82. Now, don’t take much from these predictions. They’re ludicrous. Injuries, fatigue, days off all contribute to what a player does in a season. Players haven’t played a game yet. So take these for what they mostly are — fantasy numbers.

After reaching the pinnacle in 2016, it took a while for the Cubs and their fans to come down off that cloud we were all on for the winter. And it may have helped explain why things came up short in 2017. Was the World Series hangover real? Possibly. Astros couldn’t overcome it, either. Sometimes the year after can be more difficult than the years leading up to it.
