Why doesn’t Albert Almora get more love from Chicago Cubs fans? Did the team make the right call in non-tendering reliever Hector Rondon this weekend?
The Hot Stove remains relatively quiet. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs made an interesting move at the non-tender deadline in not bringing back former closer Hector Rondon for 2018. The former closer struggled last year, but still has above-average stuff when he’s on.
Along similar lines, Chicago brought back right-hander Justin Grimm. Many believed he would be the man on the chopping block at Friday’s non-tender deadline, but it seems he’ll have another chance heading into 2018. Of course, that’s largely dependent on the team’s offseason moves – many of which will focus on the bullpen.
The club is reportedly among five finalists for Japanese two-way standout Shohei Ohtani, as well. This is the no-doubt story of the winter so far and before Christmas, we’ll know where the 23-year-old will begin his big-league career.
Another name we don’t hear much about? Albert Almora. The former first-round draft pick has continued to evolve as he’s garnered more playing time. Yet, with names like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber surrounding him, Almora gets overlooked more often than not. What would he have to do to take that next step?
