The Chicago Cubs are in the news again, this time for their supposed interest in Zach Britton. And Alex Cobb seems like a good fit in Chicago, plus he has interest in joining them. Is it a done deal?
The Chicago Cubs and Zach Britton have had some connection since the trade deadline last season. After nothing materialized, the Cubs ended up getting Justin Wilson and Alex Avila from Detroit. But once again the rumors are flowing. Would Britton come to the Cubs as their new closer? Or would it be in addition to Wade Davis? Both offer some distinct possibilities.
It seems that all the pieces are falling in line for Alex Cobb and the Cubs. His former manager Joe Maddon was a big part of the development as a person and a player. Jim Hickey has come to Chicago and could be the piece that helps to convince Cobb to come over–if he even needs any. Adding Cobb would go a long way towards hammering down next season’s rotation.
The other side to the Britton rumors is do the Cubs even need him? The cost wouldn’t be cheap, and I don’t know if they’re willing to part with the talent to get another last-inning reliever. The Cubs may very well believe that someone will emerge, even if they don’t sign Davis, Britton or anyone else. The Cubs may go the “cheaper” route if necessary, looking at guys like Carl Edwards or Justin Wilson to help pick up the slack.
