Chicago Cubs News: Closer to Central crown, Gillispie honored

MILWAUKEE, WI - SEPTEMBER 24: Jose Quintana
MILWAUKEE, WI - SEPTEMBER 24: Jose Quintana

The Chicago Cubs got a gem out of Jose Quintana as they inched closer to their second consecutive NL Central title.

The Chicago CubsJose Quintana perhaps pitched the best game by a Cubs starter all season, going the distance as they shutout the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0. The win gives the Cubs the opportunity to clinch the division as soon as Tuesday. A win over the Cards would eliminate them, but the Brewers don’t play on Monday, so they would still be mathematically alive, even with a Cubs win.

The Cubs’ Kris Bryant is having another fantastic season at the plate. But if you ask some if it compares to his 2016 MVP campaign? You’ll get a solid “no” from the fans. And why is that? Because he isn’t knocking in as many runs as he did last year. The old-school metrics are taking away from what truly is another MVP-caliber season from Bryant.

Mick Gillispie, the voice of the Tennessee Smokies, was honored as one of the co-MiLB Broadcasters of the Year by Ballpark Digest. After being named a finalist for the past three seasons, Gillispie finally took home the honors. He shared the award with longtime Indianapolis Indians’ announcer Howard Kellman.
