Chicago Cubs News: Cubs shutout in loss; In charge of their own destiny

After scoring 16 runs the night before, it’s not a surprise the Chicago Cubs were shutout by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

It seems to happen all the time. And not just to the Chicago Cubs. A day after scoring a season high in runs, the Cubs were shutout by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jake Arrieta provided a performance worthy of a victory, but the Cubs couldn’t provide him with any run support as they fell 3-0 to the D-backs. The Cubs managed just three hits, while Arrieta allowed just two runs on three hits. The Cubs will look for the series win today with Jose Quintana on the mound.

The Cubs have started the second half of the season on fire, and they likely control their own destiny for the playoffs. The Brewers overachieved for much of the first half, and they realized that as the trade deadline came and went. The Crew didn’t make any moves, as there weren’t willing to part with any of their top talent. So the Cubs should be in the driver’s seat from here on out to win the NL Central crown.

As if we didn’t know, but Anthony Rizzo is pretty good. With his two-home run game on Monday night, he also places himself in the Cubs’ record books. Rizzo joins an elite class of Cubs that have hit 25 home runs or more in four consecutive seasons. And an even smaller group of left-handers that have done it. And Rizzo isn’t done yet. What else can the young slugger do for an encore?
