One night after hanging 16 runs on the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Chicago Cubs failed to score a single run in a shutout loss Wednesday night.

0. 9. 3. 8. Final

After each team traded zeroes for the first five innings, a single, a key error and a double by Jake Lamb led to the first two runs against Chicago Cubs’ starter Jake Arrieta. Unfortunately, the offense fell flat and a shaky performance from Justin Wilson led to a third Arizona tally, capping the scoring.

Chicago tallied only three knocks in the game. Ben Zobrist tallied a single in the bottom of the first, with Kyle Schwarber and Addison Russell accounting for the other two hits – both singles.

For Arrieta, the solid starts just keep coming. The right-hander tossed seven innings of two-run (one earned) ball. He walked two and struck out eight on the night.

Arizona opened the scoring in the top of the sixth. After striking out his opposite number, Arrieta allowed a single to David Peralta. A.J. Pollock grounded a ball to short. For the second-straight night, Russell uncorked a wild throw, allowing Peralta to advance to third. With men on the corners, Jake Lamb grounded, scoring both men.

Justin Wilson pitched the eighth – making his Cubs’ debut. It was less-than-stellar first impression.  Peralta drew a leadoff walk in the frame. Two batters later, Lamb doubled again, driving in his third run of the ballgame.
