There are plenty of things the Chicago Cubs will need to do to have a better second half. Trades may be part of that. But players stepping things up is what they really need.

The Chicago Cubs have been polar opposites from last year’s team. And the crazy part has been it’s many of the same players on the roster. Guys who were there, getting the job done, coming up with that big hit? Nada. Non-existent. In the second half, the Cubs will need some of these guys to find a way to be the players they were last season. Our Corey Francis looks at five he thinks will need to pick it up in the second half of the season.

The Cubs may need a top-tier starter–a controllable young arm for the future. But that might not be in the cards this season. With the teams that are still in contention, as well as what the Cubs would have to give up–that “all-in” mentality isn’t going to work this year. There are still plenty of options out there, but the Chris Archer dreams might need to wait another year.

However, there are some low-cost options out there for the Cubs to look at it. Even better? They are already familiar with the city and can find their way around. Many of these ex-Cubs are having solid seasons, but not the kind that would cost the Cubs a plethora of prospects. The only issue with them might be the risk. But to be honest, that’s an issue no matter who you’re looking to acquire.
